This is a Christmas gift for my friend's baby:

(Yeah, that's Craftster in the background! Smiley)

I made a few mods to the pattern, such as only picking up stitches for the ear flaps, crocheting the horns, and doing the band in seed stitch instead of garter. I think its cute - I made it bigger than the pattern called for (I used Cascade 220 and CO 80 stitches on size 8s) so that Dakota could fit into it longer.

Thanks for looking! Here is the original pattern.

Very cute! Let's just hope that the hat doesn't inspire the baby to all sorts of mischief  Grin

That's so cute! Seed stitch > garter, for sure.

How large is the hat this pattern makes?  I would like to make it for at 1 1/2 to 2 year old child and am worried it might be too small.  Is it newborn sized?  Or can a 2 year old wear it?  Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

bopalena,

I asked someone on Ravelry the same thing, and here's what she said:

A 6-12 month old baby will probably have a head about 17-19 inches around. As written, the pattern is about 17 inches around, so it should fit about a 12-month-old baby. If you wanted to cast on fewer you could, but kids grow so fast that you might just want to knit it as written.

So, it should fit. However, I decided to cast on extra anyway.

I'd like to make mine larger as well.  How many stitches did you add on?  When you start to work the earflaps, how many did you cast off and how many did you knit onto a holder for the earflaps?  I'm sorry to be asking so many questions, but I'm lousy at changing patterns.  Thank you!

I casted on 80 sts instead of 70, so that at the end, when you're supposed to draw the yarn through 7 sts, you draw them through 8.

I did not do the provisional cast on at the beginning - I just casted on normally, knit the hat, and then picked up 12 sts on each side for the earflaps. And I did the i-cord using 4 sts instead of 3. (I think I'm just ornery or something.)

Thanks!     Smiley

I was going to do the same thing and skip the provisional cast off and just pick up the stitches on either side.  Glad to see it worked out well for your hat.
