----> I have revised the pattern and re-released it on a FREE PATTERNS BLOG that I have started up! have a LOOK!  http://knitallthethings.blogspot.com/2012/03/checkered-toque.html
I am still currently fixing up the blog but the info is there with links to here and to Ravelry pages.

Since I have had a few requests for a pattern for this hat i figured i would start a new topic for it and focus on just this hat... so anyways... here's the pictures of it followed by my attempt at pattern writing...

and one that i have made previously in red and black just to show another color...

Yarn- Patons Classic Wool Merino (worsted weight)
(i used like half a ball of each color ish)
Needles- US 4 (3.5mm) circular needle or DPNS
             US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles and/or DPNS
GAUGE- 5 sts per inch
Other supplies needed- Yarn needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers to mark the beginning of the round as well as where to decrease.

Pattern-
-Using the smaller needles cast on 84 stitches put marker (pm) at beginning of round and being careful not to twist, join in the round and Knit 2 Purl 2 ribbing for 1 inch
-Next round change to bigger needles (the rest of the hat will be knit, no purling) and increase 12 stitches evenly on this next round. (i used the m1 increase)
-This round bring in your contrast color (white) *knit 2 stitches in white, 2 in black* and continue the round knitting 2 stitches of each color being careful not to pull the carrying yarn too tight.
- Do a second round in the same k2 white k2 black
- This next round *knit 2 black then knit 2 white* and continuing that around for this round and the next
-Follow these last 4 rows until the hat measures 6 inches from needle to bottom of ribbing.
- put marker (pm) every 16 sts around the hat this is where the decreases will be made
- keep knitting keeping with the checkered pattern but make sure to decrease (k2tog) before each marker every round up until there is 6 sts left on the needles (2 sts per DPN). To get the black lines like i did use the black yarn to knit the decreases (or you could use the white) each time even if it didnt keep with the checkered pattern.
- when those last 6 sts are on the needles cut the yarns and using the yarn needle thread the tail through the last few stitches pulling them in tight and then weaving in the ends.. and thats about it...

Please go over this and ask any questions if something needs clarifying.. its early and im just going by whats in my head.. i didnt take any notes for this when i was writing it...

thanks everyone!

This really makes me wish I could knit. :| I started learning and I was doing okay but I had no time to dedicate to it. But maybe I'll try again soon!

hey -- i LOVE this hat!  can you tell me the gauge?  i am a really loose knitter and i don't want it to turn out huge!  i'm assuming it's going to be 4 or 5 sts per inch since it's worsted weight yarn?
