I have my hands full...

I loved the look of the Knitting Needle Bag [available free here http://www.knittingdaily.com/freepatterns/bags/?patternsandposts=1&showposts=1&organizeby=date&skilllevels=all], but I thought it would be uncomfortable to carry around a purse with pointy needles on the end.  Plus, I wanted a purse that could stand up to everything I cram in there.  When I saw a faux-croc purse on clearance at a local store, inspiration hit and here you have it:

I was fortunate that the pattern fit the frame as-is, no tweaking needed!  I used two skeins of Lamb's Pride Bulky, just knit one side until I got to the end of the skein, then repeated for the other side.  Stash-busting is a beautiful thing.

Here's everything I cram in my purse (minus the odd scraps of paper and receipts that eventually work their way in) :

And here it is all full and zipped up:

Thanks for looking!

I love it!  I also liked the pattern of the knit portion, but wasn't in love with the knitting needle handles.  Great job!

Fantastic!  Beautiful purse.  Love the idea! I love knitted bags but I need the structure/compartments of my giant granny bags- so I might steal your idea at some point...

Thanks, everyone!  Usually when I make something I have to distance myself from it for a few days before I decide it looks okay and I like it after all, but this one was instant love.  Smiley

How did you stitch the knitting on the bag?

First I cut the body of the purse off.   I made sure the lining was pulled outside of the bag so I wouldn't accidentally cut it.  So all I had left was the top bit you see in the pictures, with the lining still attached and disembodied handles.

Then I pinned the knitted fabric in-between the lining and the "leather" bit and did a modified whip stitch by hand.  If you look closely on the picture of the lining you can see my hand stitches.

Finally I attached the handles to the body of the bag using yarn.  It's attached to the lining so it won't pull the knitted fabric out of shape.

Hope that made sense.

Brilliant idea! I love the original pattern but like you, didn't want to carry around pointy sticks that would eventually end up poking me, especially on public transit. I was thinking of using dowels but this idea is brilliant... may just have to borrow your idea! Grin

That is great!  is that the lining from the original bag, or is it all new?

The lining is from the original bag.  I didn't have to sew zippers!  Smiley
