craftydeb, if you find out let me know... I know I have the issues with the seam allowances, but I don't think that is why mine end up as a rectangle too
oh, I must add that instead of a 3inch square, I used... uh... I used centimetres, but most likely that was like 2/3 of an inch less, sort of 2,25inches squares. or maybe 2 inches. I draw the 3 inch squares on the fabric and saw that the space in between was too small, so I changed it

It looks like you need to cut a 3" long by 1 1/2" deep square - so it isn't really a 3" square - more like you are cutting out a rectangle...
What I did was draw a rectangle... mark my center mark. On the 18" lenght of the rectangle mark it in 3" sections. On the halfway mark, center your 6" area - and you are left with a 3x 1 1/2" rectangle to cut out. It was loads easier once I drew it all out and saw what I needed to do - I will post up a pic once the kids are awake and I can use the noisy scanner.
Dang time changes kill me - I got up at 4.... I am not going to be a happy person by tonight. I'm not a happy person right about now - and the day is just starting!
But I do think I have it all figured out oddly enough - and I am just stocked waiting for the magic time when the sewing machine can be turned on again!
I did cut out my pieces last night for my prototype using my ugly fabric. Yes, I have ugly fabric that I bought to practice things on - you would think that I wouldn't own ugly fabric but when I bought it I really thought it was cool but I truly have grown to hate it. It is just ugly.

craftydeb and others,
Apologies for the wacky measurements and for the consternation they are causing you! There's nothing worse than a busted tutorial.
I know I cut out perfect 3" squares from the
folded
edge of my fabric to arrive at the first bucket. But perhaps my other measurements are wonky. I'll look into it as well.
Thank you silverfisch and craftADDchick for trying to help, and thanks craftydeb for your patience!

I don't think the directions were wonky at all - I just needed to write it down on paper to visualize it. I did draw it out - and got sidetracked. I am scanning right now and will try to get it uploaded before I take my son to school!
Don't fret - not wonky - it really is me. Trust me. I have been known to be VERY dense!
Okay - I just went to upload the pic - and did and when I was looking at it I realized that my math was off - so I will try again later!
modified to add...
Okay. I got it now.. it should be a 12x18 rectangle - folded in to a 12x9 piece - then cut out 3" squares on the sides - (add seam allowance all around if you want exactly 6" square)
For the width - I figured - 3 + 6 + 3 (the 3's being for the sides)
For the length 6 + 3 + 3 + 6 (the 3's being for the bottom)
I am off to cut fabric!!! Whoo hooo! Thank you brain - I think it is finally working!

I have achieved squareness and I am soooo proud of myself! I didn't put on the handles since this was just my prototype - and I ended up not using my fugly fabric. I decided I would want to keep this - and so here it is without further ado.....
My square paw printed now holding some cds that were cluttering my sewing desk (yes, it is on an old computer desk with the hutch removed - why remove the hutch? The knitting machine carriage kept running in to it so it had to gooo!)
I think I will use some sort of inner facing for the next one... since mine is a bit floppy when it is empty. I am also thinking of adding some pockets to the outside of it as well. OOOh. I wonder if I could make a lid next. OKay. I am just getting far too in to this now!

ooooh squareness!!
kargrrl, your tutorial was just great. I think my main problem was translating inches to cm. you absolitely rock
craftydeb, I am noting down your measurements to convert them into cm and check if now I reach squareness too
I thought about a lid, too, so please don't forget to post pics of any extra you add to the basket!
btw, I love your paw fabric!

Aww thanks on the loving the paw fabric - I scored it at Walmart - it was a buck a yard! I did buy like 5 yards of it - I have made a bunch of things out of it... which reminds me.. I need to make Buster a new bed for one of his boxes! I should do that now!!!
I think I got it down now... Hmmm... maybe I will make a bunch of these for some lucky recipient and have them all nestled inside each other.. hmmmm... I love Craftster. It really does just get it all flowing!
silverfisch
- to figure it out -
for the width - double the cm/in you want it to end up being when all is said and done....
For the length - triple it....
for the square cut out - cut it in half....
So if you want it to be 20cm square.. (just to make a nice round number for the example)
cut your fabric 40cm x 60cm
fold it in half to make a 40x30cm
cut out 10cm squares on the corner to get that "I" shape and then you are off and running!! Please check my math before you cut - and if you want it to be an EXACT size make sure you add in a seam allowance..

I think I have it... finally, after much thinking, if I add 1cm to those 40cmx60cm and turn them into 41cm x 60cm, then I add 0,5 cm to each horizontal line of the cut out squares to form the I
I was never good at math, as you can see
I have holiday on wednesday so I will try this out again, this time with a thin fabric I really like and medium weight interfacing to help it stand up
