Tutorial: from coat to messanger bag

Don't some blazers like that already have interfacing inside?  I was thinking I wouldn't have to iron on any additional.  I've not yet inspected the inside of the one I have in mind, though...

I showed your post to a guy friend and he could not believe it could be done... So he insisted that I should make him a bag out of a coat...

Found a neat houndsooth print at the thrift store for $2 - I sort of did a half-a**'d pattern myself and was sure to cut the pieces so I could use the pockects from the coat on the new bag.....

I put the final touches today... So I'm sure my friend will be thrilled when he stops by later....

and to dragornaked: maybe some coats have interfacing inside? im not exactly sure, i guess you would just have to look before hand.

my bag has been holding up well, although there have been a few small places where the seam has split, but i think that's because i'm rough with it and it's been carrying around my very heavy schoolbooks. and i knew i shouldve sewn the seams twice! but i was too lazy. oh well.

i was completely in love with this idea, so my friend and i went to value village and it was memorial day so i got my coat half off, and i only paid a little over a dollar i think, but after i seam ripped, even though it was a large coat, the pieces all seem to be too small, like i would have to sew them back together to make it.   what really did i do wrong here, and did you seam rip everything or leave some things sewed together? help?

if i can remember correctly i think i ripped everything except the main seam down the middle of the back of the coat. i think everything else was ripped though.
