I don't know what's getting more praise, the actual craft, or Andrew himself!  I guess it doesn't matter, they are both amazing!!
My friend Andrew asked me if I would teach him to sew a necktie skirt so that he could give it to his girlfriend, Sydney for Christmas.

"Of course!"  Teaching kids to sew is just about my favorite thing in the world to do and I was really impressed that Andrew wanted to give this a try.  Andrew is 16.  This was his first sewing project and it turned out great!

First he borrowed one of Sydney's favorite skirts so that we would be sure to get the size right.  Then he selected ties in her favorite colors.  He cut them to length, stitched across the top to secure the basting and began sewing them together:

I helped him a little with the zipper, but he did 99.9% of the project himself.  Here he is attaching the waistband:

And here he is hand stitching the waistband on the inside of the skirt:

Here it is all done!

Didn't he do a great job?

Shhhhh.... don't tell Sydney....  It's a surprise!

hmm does he have any friends without girl friends?......anyway great job, i dont think i could even sew anything that well

That's terrific! Maybe Andrew could do up a tutorial to teach my boyfriend how to make a skirt. Wink

So, my question is:
Are the ties sewn along their sides or do the ties hang freely and individually like on a grass hula skirt?
How do you wear a skirt like this?
Curious as all get out.
