I am long winded, so here goes...

Inspired by the other posts on here, I've been wanting to do a fabric headboard for quite awhile.

We live in a rental with blah sand colored walls (only the kitchen and bathroom are white) that we can't paint and wanted something to make the room not so boring.  But it took quite a bit of convincing to get my DH to help me build one.

I followed Bejane.com's tutorial and it was remarkably easy.  I met with 2 problems:
1.  Tufting the buttons.  DH drilled big enough holes for me to pull the buttons through.  I had a big enough needle and thread, but the foam and batting prooved to be stubborn to pierce through to find the hole again on the way back after attaching the buttons.

2. I bought 2 sets of 18" cleat picture hangers from Lowes that are made by http://www.hangmanstore.com/ because neither Lowes or Home Depot had the front mounting brackets shown in the article.

I met with resistance from the DH on using the Hangman hangers, so DH had me print out the front mounting brackets picture off the Bejane.com website and went to Ace hardware with the picture.  The helper I found, knew exactly what I was talking about and said they are often used to hang cabinets.

We ended up using the Hangman cleats because DH did not expect that the back would be so puffy from me pulling the fabric/batting tight so it was bulky.  He also didn't expect the headboard to weigh enough to keep the cleats snapped in place.  Even though I repeatedly told him about both things... PBBBBBTT MEN.

Before (BORING)

Assembled, waiting to be hung:

How many men does it take a measurement for hanging the headboard?

Close up of the fabric.  Can you even see the button?

In place.  We had to rehang the Bettie Page poster because how high I wanted it.

The headboard measures 24 x 84 before adding the fabric and foam.
I spent approximately $70.74:
$8.97 for 3 yards of Crushed Panne Velvet (Joanns)
$12.77 for 1" foam (Walmart has this precut and packaged with the batting)
$16 for 2 bags of 86X91 Extra Loft batting (40% off at Joanns)
$8 for 1/2 OSB (cut at Lowes, I still have a24 x 96 piece hiding behind the couch until we can think of the next project).
$5.00 Stapler (40% of Michaels)
$20.00 2 Hangman Package Cleats (at Lowes in the picture hanging section)

And now next we need to buy this comforter set to make me happy.http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5996080
Anyway, Thanks for suffering thru this long post!

Best episode of 'Cops' ever made:
officer- "ma'am why do you have scissors in your pocket?"

Thanks for all the positive comments!  Now if Walmart gets my comforter in stock, I will be all set.

That looks great, it gives the bed more weight.  I might do something like this for my son's bed.

kestrel- hehehe... sorry. It's only 80 bucks too, if you do site to store. Smiley  I was looking at paying around 300 and had a hard time finding anything we both agreed on.  For some crazy reason I went to Walmart's website (I hate that place) and they had it!
Please post pics of your room when it's done, I bet it will look awesome.
