I made BEST OF 2007 for my frozen bird nest pic!

So, it's not my sewing machine.  It's a friend's.  I've been taking good care of it for the better part of a year now though.   Cheesy  It lives happily in my living room the majority of the time.

I'm not a sewing genius like you guys.  I just stick some fabric under the foot and hope for a straight line, but lately I've been making these "draft dodgers" (no idea what else they're called) that you put in the door to block cool air from coming in.

Here's one I made and stuffed with some kitty litter that I kept in the backseat of my car for 2 months.  Yeah, I'm that lazy.  People keep asking me if I got a cat.

I made about half a dozen others with various material, some home decor fabric, but I stuffed all of those with my recycled plastic grocery bags but the kitty litter is much heavier and nicer than bags (less noisy, too... and less bulky!).

Do you guys have suggestions on what else I could place in there?  I think I'm going to make these for a craft fair b/c they're fast and cheap to make and practical, so I think they'll sell.  I can't use sand b/c I can't buy that here.  Kitty litter tends to "dust" everywhere, even when I double up on the fabric.

Okay...comment away!  Thanks for being amazed  Wink

Rice or beans, maybe?

You used a really pretty fabric by the way. It looks good.

Thanks! I buy whatever is cheap  Wink   JoAnn's is the place for generic but cool fabric.

I was going to use rice or beans but I was afraid that mice or insects would be drawn to it and the rice was about $7-10 for a 5 lb bag and I spent $6 on a 20 lb bag of kitty litter.  I can't find beans in giant bags like I want/need.

The plastic grocery bags, this is a great way to recycle them, but it took about an hour of cartoons to stick them in the lil tube and smoosh it way down at the bottom.  I'm pressed for time.  At least with the kitty litter I can just take cups of it and fill it up in less than 30 seconds.

ooo!  luv the fabric!

maybe a clumping cat litter would be less dusty?

We use Feline Pine litter, which you can get as clumping or in pellets.  It's not the cheapest, but the pellets should hold together well and give you a whiff of pine fragrance.

I think I'll have to add this to my ever-growing list of project ideas!

DON'T USE RICE!

My cousin did an art project once involving rice and stockings and it sat around for a while.

We had lots of mice.  In an apartment block...

I recommend sand.  It's heavy and floppy.

Have you considered putting the litter in a plastic bag, and then putting it in the fabric? Might cure your dust problem........just a thought.
Good Job on the sewing as well!

I have some of those here and I put sawdust inside them, don't overfill them, it wont attract mice or rats and if they get wet you can hang them out to dry.

No... that hasn't occurred to me.   Roll Eyes   Wouldn't it bulk up since the bag is bigger than my 'tube'?  Maybe I should cut my bags up and sew them into tubes then fill them with kitty litter then shove them into the fabric tube... ?  Hmm.... I think I make too much work for myself always.

I think i would go with rice, i've been meaning to make some of these but things like sawdust and sand are just too scarey (the potential for getting all over the house is just limitless).

I love the fabric you chose as well!

Thanks...
Surprisingly, if you really stare at all the fabrics at JoAnn's, a lot just stand out.  I've been going nuts there lately.  They have a lot of cool retro prints that fit right in with my home and my friends' homes.
