i'm making a bustier out of a tank top, but it needs boning. they don't have any of that fancy stuff at the thrift store, so does anyone know of a cheap boning alternative? like something i could find around the house. i read somewhere that strips of milk carton works, but i drink soy milk (which comes in those little paper carton things). please help!

You could use the cover to those cheap soft plastic ring bind folders. I've used it before as the peak on a cap and you can actually sew through it, so it works really well.

heavy duty zip ties from a home improvement store work.  They are plastic and washable, and there are several sizes so you can get the super heavy ones if you need them and cut them to size or the shorter lighter ones if that is all you need support wise.

Not as good as spiral steel, but a lot easier to come by.
