I used my old magazines, especially the artsy, fashiony ones like W, for wrapping paper.  The not-so-pretty pages sometimes get shredded for padding inside.  The presents look unique and pretty, and I don't feel badly that the paper just gets thrown away afterwards.

I have a pair of high-heeled mary janes, which, much as I love them, have become horribly scuffed up. I want to cover them up with magazine or newspaper clippings, but I'm not sure how to make them durable enough. I'd like to be able to make the covering at least a little waterproof. Will clear gloss (gel medium stuff, used in arcrylic painting, or for collaging) do the trick? Or that clear protective spary for pastels and pencils and the like? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I got the idea for the reuse of my magazine clippings from....you guessed it!  A magazine.  I found this cheezy pinwheel quilt project in a Martha Stewart magazine, but i liked all the fabric she had used.  So, i cut out the template  for the diamond on a piece of cardboard and cut out every cool pattern ( i looked out for shapes, colors, repetition, etc...) i found in a magazine in the same diamond shape and now my whole wall will soon be covered with my magazine clippings quilt.

That is a really cool idea for an on-going project. I might try something like that in one of the rooms in my house that already has ick wallpaper. Very nice. I can also imagine it in color gradiations.

As for covering shoes in magazine clippings, would something like the two part epoxy/acrylics that they use to coat wooden clocks or whatnot work as a sealant? They carry the stuff at most hardware stores (I just got some at Home Depot, but havent tested its properties yet). I imagine you could apply it with a foam brush or paint brush (that you will never be able to use again).

I don't think I saw this mentioned early, but if it's a repeat I apologize. I take full pages from magazines that I like and trace an envelope pattern that I made onto them, then I cut it out, glue it together, and voila! you have a handmade really cool looking envelope.
I also take old garden and seed catalogs and create pretty postcards with them. See http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=6536.0 for a few pictures

i just finished making salt and pepper shakers out of comic book strips. they look awesome! well, i didn't make the shakers, i bought cheap ones and sort of papier mached(i cannot spell!) the outsides with cat woman and batman comic book strips, and they look absolutely fantastic in my blue and red kitchen! yay! so speaking of furniture, i want to get some really simple wooden chair and cover it in comic strips or funky beer labels! hehe! what's the stuff called you can put over things that sort of hardens them like plastic? am i making any sense? does anyone know???

Beckie, are you thinking of polyurethane? That's the heavy-duty stuff. There's also things like Mod Podge, which I think helps to seal paper.

OK, this one isn't my idea.  People with a great love of books, don't cringe too much here.  I met a high school girl who came up with this idea but I didn't get her name.  Anyway, she had gotten a hardbound book out of the trashcan, torn out everyother page and glued her magazine clipping on the pages.  It was realy neat looking with the book text as the background.  When she wrote in notes along the edges, she had used a red pen.  You could paste in scrap paper to write on if you needed more space.  The whole book was really funky.  I know you'd need to tear out the pages as my work notebook gets paper pasted into it on almost every page and that thing is a half inch on one side and an inch and a half on the other.  Great for roll pens down but not very easy to put in a bookshelf.
