I used a technique from on this board...which, of course, I can't find at the moment (if someone can find it can they post here?). I used the gel from a bleach pen and painted it on the stencil with a paint brush until it was the lightness I wanted. The gel tends to not bleed as much in my experience.

Great idea!  I haven't tried bleaching yet because of the bleeding issue, but I might have to try that paint brush technique.
