for my asl class (and since i want an AA degree in it)
i figured when i went to deaf community events it would be awesome to have a neato shirt.
i used a bleach pen, computer paper, black t-shirt, and an exacto knife
so here it is!

i'm thinking of bleaching "student" on the back.
if i can find a good sign of it.
if not, i may even write my name in the fingerspelling on the back.
or student in fingerspelling.

any comments would be superb!

This is a fantastic shirt!  It would be good to wear to Deaf events since the colors are subtle and wouldn't be distracting . I think adding student on the back would be great too.

ps- I'm a Sign Language interpreter Wink

Wow, that is an awesome idea! I got to go on a tour of Gallaudet University with my senior class; it was amazing.

I must try bleaching a shirt now, that is such a cool effect <3

What a fantastic shirt!  My minor in college was ASL, despite the fact that everyone tried to tell me it was impractical .. I have used it more than I have used my major in the real world!  Haha Tongue

I have a asl shirt that says, "if you can read this lets talk". However mine I got at a thrift store. And I've been wearing it for 7 years so it's all thin vintage shirt feeling.

I don't get your bragging rights though when everyone tells you how awesome your shirt is you get to say, "thanks I made it."

My deaf daughter would wear that proudly. I think I might have to copy it, but I'll use swedish sign launguage instead.

Nice!

That's a really nice tee shirt.  I really like the bleach effect and it is pretty subtle. :-)

The sign for student is LEARN-PERSON.  If you can't find any signs I can try and do pics of the sign.  (I graduated from Gallaudet)

i used this stencil i made
(took if off an online picture of the alphabet)

cut out the white parts with an exacto knife.
(inside the black outline)
filled the holes with the bleach pen
pulled off the stencil
and outlined the letters

thanks!
i've been concidering taking a picture of myself.
but dont want to try and make it a stencil.
i have thought about scanning in my asl level one book
(published by a bunch of deaf professors)
and doing it that way.
and i hope you dont mind my asking, but are you yourself deaf?
or did you go to gallaudet because you wanted to interpret?

My daughter really wants to go to Gallaudet, but it seems to be REALLY hard for foreigners to get in. Well, she'll have to finish highschool first I suppose. If anyone has any info please pm me. Smiley

oh that is fantastic!
i just made my first bleach-stenciled shirt and i'm definately inspired for another one now
i'm hoping to take an asl class in the winter because last year, and this year again in february, i went on a missions trip to jamica and we spent a few days at a childrens deaf school and i would love to be able to communcate with them better. and i've been interested in sign language since, like, 8th grade so that's really just more motivation to take an actual class.
i definately think you should add student the back, it'd be so perfect

This shirt is great! I study Auslan (Australian sign language) and my mum is deaf, i have always wanted to make a shirt with sign on it, and this looks like an awesome way to do it!!
I wish they offered sign at universities here in Aus, you have to study it at a vocational college, and you can't include it in your degree - it's stupid Sad

That's a fricken' awesome shirt.  Reminds me of my old ASL shirt that had the sign for "I love You" and below it it said "It's only foreign until you learn it."

Love this! I've never used the bleach technique before, so i have some Qs.
1. Is it a regular bleach pen or bleach gel pen? I don't know if there is a difference.
2. How long did you leave the bleach on? Did you wash it off immediately?
3. How did you keep it from bleeding too much?
4. Did you just freehand the border around the hands?
5. Do you know how awesome your shirt is?  Grin

Answers:
1. its a clorox gel bleach pen
2. i let it sit the entire time, and once i was finished with all of it, i rinsed off the remaining goo of bleach before washing it in the washing machine.  usually i let it sit longer so that it ends up turning a brighter rusty orange color.
3. i outline the inside of the stencil, and then fill it in.
4. this time i did. i wanted an outside to the hands so that i made sense instead of just being pieces and parts of the hands. on my boyfriend's donnie darko one, i didnt outline the stencil.
5. almost Smiley but i like hearing people tell me that, so i can tell them i made it, and watch their jaws drop. lol.

and to see the refrenced donnie darko one, click here
one hard part is to keep the pen from deciding to shoot out a whole lot of bleach at one spot, like you can see on the top of the ear in the donnie darko shirt.  thats the only problem i've really had.

My high school asl club had t-shirts with things spelled on them, and the hands looked exactly like this. weird. I've seen someone wearing a shirt that said, "If you dont know sign language then you are missing out on my t shirt." In fingerspelling.

i think you should try and fit THAT into the back Smiley

I just saw this in the Best of 2007 and I HAD to comment! My first love, passion, and major was ASL.  It really is the best language of all time.  I have an AA degree in ASL b/c when I moved, the school where I attend now doesn't offer ASL, but once I get my BFA, I plan to move on up someplace that teaches ASL b/c I miss it and can't remove myself from deaf culture.  AHH! I have all kinds of ASL blending into my home.... ASL alphabet in fridge magnets, an I Love You pillow on my bed, ASL pencils... I keep waiting for someone who wants me to teach them!  Cheesy   Anyway, I got seriously sidetracked.... I really just wanted to say "awesome t-shirt"!  Smiley
