Hi, at my work we have started making dolls for the Uthando project
http://www.uthandoproject.org/
It is basically a project of making dolls for children in Africa affected by AIDS
We are making dolls, with complete set of clothes and a change of clothes in a cloth bag.
There are a few requirements that we have been told to adhere to, for example, the dolls are to be brown (not black),
have non floppy necks and the collection point we are sending ours too before posting are quite firm that the dolls have knickers on.
anyhoo, we have a made a few so here are some pics so you can get an idea what its all about if you feel like joining in.
If you would like to know more , please feel free to message me and I will help as best I can, thanks for reading.
Sue

the first two pics look like a police line up, Smiley but hopefully are clear enough, the other pic was an attempt to show all our work so far including the bags in the back, and additional garments at the front.

added on the 15/10/07
Heres the ones we are working on at the moment, some great work by the ladies at work!
Just have to make some more clothes now to dress them.

thanks for looking!  Smiley

What a fantastic project!  I was touched as I read about the children, this is definitely going on my 'to-do' list!

Thanks so much for sharing your bright and happy dolls; I'm sure the children will be delighted!

These look sooo much like dolls I got while I was in Zimbabwe. They are wonderful. I would really like to be involved in this.

Mother, Shake a Tale Feather is a wild song. It's got a good beat and you can dance to it!

Aww, what a lovely thing to do!
And they look very well kitted out too - I love the little apron the most.

Thanks for the comments and feel free to spread the word! There are so many children that are affected, Im sure every doll will go to a good home.
There are both sewing and knitting projects on the website and I can scan and post the clothes patterns if required.
I was thrilled to go to work today and find four naked little dolls, waiting for "hair and makeup"!
My co-workers are a great bunch and we are determined to make a few each week to send off.
Tips and ideas...We found some soft brown blanket fabric and that worked out cheap and soft for some of the dolls bodies.
We also are experimenting with curtain offcuts to make the carrybags to fit the dolls in.
We also make a necklace or two for each doll out of beads and stretch elastic that the child receiving the doll can easily get off and on and also use as a bracelet for themselves.
thanks again,
Sue

I can't tell you enough times how cool this project is, Sue. We need to remember that sometimes it doesn't take a village to raise a child-it takes a world. I am going to try to get my church's youth group involved in this.

I just downloaded the pattern.   Smiley

I really want to make a doll for this cause.  I hope to get to it soon. I have a very full crafting plate right now.
