Personally, I would find a box to ship your can in, using discarded newspaper to pad it.

Some people secure the top on the can with packing tape, put a mailing label on the outside and ship it as it's own container. This is fine if you're confident that it will make the trip. The vulnerability of the can freaks me out though, so I'll be shipping them in a box
