heehee

My Co-worker collects ladybugs but I've been doing cakes long enough to know that black red frosting doesn't always taste that great and black frosting looks quite icky on one's teeth.  LOL

So, I was thinking - how do I get a thin layer of black and red over white frosting without and airbrush??

Then I remembered a techique from the Wilton books called "Sotas"!!  Here's a closeup:

It's basically piles of swirls, done with a #1, 2 or 3 tip!  The ladybug dots were done by going round and round and round, instead of the swirls.

It worked!  Whew!  Sometimes I get these bright ideas and they work in my head but I'm never quite sure if they're going to work forreal!

I collect ladybugs too - can I be your co-worker?  I love the cake, it had to take alot of time and patience.

Thanks Nasty Wench

And Lulu - Actually, the red and black part took less than half an hour!  The techique is moving your arm around in little teenie circles, really quickly, while squeezing constantly!

Thanks again!

That is so sweet!  My mother in law collects ladybugs and I know she'd go ga-ga over this.  Too bad she doesn't like frosting huh?

You did a great job, and I love how you got around doing tons of dark frosting!

If all else fails, hide.  It works for bunnies.
