When this challenge was announced, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  I had picked up a very strange board game at a garage sale in July, and hadn't figured out what to do with it.  It was an environmentalist's dream...a game designed for children to teach them about whales, the ocean environment, and how evil humans are---waaaait a minute! My kids can't play with this!!
So, when the challenge came up, I knew what game to use, and I knew it had to drip with irony.  This is a sushi set made of the "Save the Whales" board game.
I feel kinda bad...but in a really goooood way.

I used the game board to make a bento box,

The cards are used to hold the ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce,

and the little metal whale game markers are used as the chopstick rests.  I also used a melamine tray I had on hand as an appetizer serving tray--I decoupaged some of the playing cards onto the dish areas to tie them in.
I also had a couple of plates that matched really well, sorta completes the set.

Okay, I HAVE to post quick, before I turn into a pumpkin (or the posting deadline happens..I'm so tired I forgot what happens at midnight)

I have been working like crazy on this for the last 36 hours, and have spent the last 2 fighting to get my pictures uploaded so I can show them off.  I am so glad to get this posted!!

Okay, now that it's up, I'm gonna try and get the rest of my pictures up---wheew!
Link to the game---it's a beautifully make environmentalist wacko (my apologies to the environmentalist wackos) game....it was a joy to work with.  When my son saw my finished project, he actually asked if we could play it.....lol--little late now buddy!

Thanks guys...you have no idea how frantic it's been here...I had to drive to the next town to buy a USB cord to download my pictures because the SD drive wouldn't read the file!

Now if I could just get photobucket to cooperate with me, I can get the better pictures up.

And the sushi was tasty Smiley

Very funny! But am I the only one in the WORLD who can't STAND sushi? I always feel so dull, because the "cool", trendy people like it. But I've tried and tried and just can't stomach the stuff.  Sad

Lol...no, I have a friend who cant stand it either.  And it's not about the fish...she doesn't like the cold sticky rice squashed up next to veggies and meats of various textures.
So see, you're not "not cool" you just have a very sensitive texture palate (or at least that what you can tell people)

lol..so that's what that is!  I told the kids that it was a volcano, and I kept looking at it, trying to make it into some kind of --uhhh-- sphincter?
Gross.
Golden Barnacle is much nicer, and makes so much sense now.

LOl..you're kidding!?!  I tried to read the instructions for it, but they were laced with so much propoganda, that i never really got the gist of what I had to do.

That is too funny'''"hippie parents"--I actually snorted.

Thanks!
I haven't figured out what to do with the extra whales yet...I tossed them all into the bottom of the cubby on the bento box I made for them---figured that we could pick a new whale each time.

Very cute job! I love whales, love sushi, and love irony, so this had me giggling for over an hour after I first saw it. What method did you use to make it food-safe?

Weeeelllll........."food safe" is a realtive term in my world.  I Mod Podged the heck out of it to make it hand washable, and the sushi sits on one of those mats you use to make sushi (thank goodness I had an extra one) cut to size.  I wouldn't sell it, or probable evn gift it, but for me and my family---it's safe enough.
And BTW, this was my first time Mod Podging anything...that stuff is magical...I have a serious craft supply crush developing.

I played this game!  I had totally forgotten about it, apparently blocked it out, but when I saw those playing pieces I remember playing with them!  I don't remember much about the game though.  My favorite game when I was little was about inventors and getting patents.

Boy this game really had some neat pieces to work with. You did a great job of making into the Sushi set and utilized all the pieces so well.

That is TOO funny.  And you're pretty gutsy - I would've been afraid of backlash.

Could the whales become chopstick stand-thingies (you know those things that keep the tips of your chopsticks from touching the table)?

BTW - I also hate sushi - also not the fish - but not the rice either - I hate seaweed.  But I LOVE sashimi.  YUM.

It's not that I don't want to swap, it's that I often don't have time.  But feel free to ask (especially if it's one that's not too time consuming).

Yep, that's how I decided to use the whales.  And I gave up a long time ago worrying about what people think about my sense of humor...I've found that if I can weed out the folks who don't "get" me, leaving only the ones who would make good friends!
