SO I had some old logs
see http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=192874.0
and if you've seen any of my other  posts you might notice I have a thing for old chairs.
Put the two together and voila-a wonderful addition to the Chez Funkrustico back yard. Or maybe the front-I could sit and observe life on the block Grin

I laughed out loud because of a very fond college memory when I saw your chair!

Several of us sculpture folks went drinking after a gallery opening (duh, we were in college!). Jeff proceeded to knock over & fall out of his chair not once but twice in the course of the evening. Monday we got a new assignment: make a piece of furniture or houshold item for only one purpose (like, a bathroom drawer with an insert that fits your toothbrush and nothing else).
So on the due date Dale brings in "Jeff's Drinking Chair", a tree stump from right down at the ground, with the top portion of a dining chair and a seatbelt attatched (the shoulder & hip front seat type no less). The base of the stump/chair was probably 4 1/2 feet across, definately no knocking it over, and it weighed a ton. Proff loved it & it stayed in the lab till the end of the semester when Jeff actually got to take it home.

Ahhh, good times, good times... Thanks for the memory!

I love it!!!

The person who mentioned the bedside table:
I love that idea! I can totally picture my lonely bed having one of those. Varnish it, then carve some stuff into it. Thats ingenious.

My bedside stump is as it was sawn from the tree - it needs to be leveled and perhaps finished a bit - I don't sit any drinks on it!

Thanks for all of the comments....I never know what type of reaction I'll get for my posts Tongue
I haven't polyurethaned it yet-it's so dry here I'm not sure if I really need to. And I have a couple more logs, so I'm looking for a table top maybe to use with it.

on this note, there is a man here in town who makes neat-o sculptures out of tree stumps that had to be cut down for whatever reason, I noticed that all his creations are poly-ed and they last longer than the ones people do and dont apply poly...they seem to crack and splinter quicker and they dry out without poly   Wink

Something I learned recently about working with wood outdoors- put it upside down if it's touching the earth. Wood never looses its natural wicking ability, it the 'root' end is dry the wood will stay dry longer, plunk it in the hole upside down & seal the end. I learned this from two old cowboys using cedar posts for a fence.

More great advice. I wish I could say I love polyurethaning...but I don't. I tend to like the flaking off look.

Did you hallow out the middle of the log to make it easier to move or does it not turn out to be that heavy? I think that would be perfect idea for my dad and my inlaws, but I would want to make sure they would lift it and move it about as they pleased.

It's so cute for a log/chair! I wish I had my own yard to do this with lol.

I didn't hollow it out because I wanted it heavy-it's very windy here. You could definitely do that, though-or put it on casters to roll-they're cheap at the hardware store.
