I'm making the Brown Bag pattern on knitty's website. I already made the bag base now I need to start the bag body. The problem is, I don't know where! In the pattern it says to place a stitch marker at the end of the row. I did that. Now it says to pick up stitches on the adjacent side. What's the adjacent side? The short side closest to the needle point? The side away from the point of the needle? WHAT?

Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple.

My current craft project: crochet domokun doll.

I've never done this pattern, but I'd hazard a guess and say I'm pretty sure it means the stitches nearest the needle.  Won't you just keep going around the whole edge, picking up stitches, then knit in the round?  If so then you'll just continue the way the needle is pointing...

Will private swap for handspun yarn!

Yeah, pick up stitches where you would have started knitting if you hadn't bound off.
