lock them in the cellar and feed them pins

I made this cutsie quilt for my cousins new premmie baby girl who has just got home from hospital.  The feature fabrics are Brady Blossoms by ( I think) michael miller and some fabby vintage lime green floral stuff I have been dying to use for ages.  I went for a strippy quilt for quickness and to show of the fabrics.  It is trimmed with ribbon and free motion quilted in the borders.

The matching doll is from the fabulous pattern by Jhoanna Monte Aranezhttp://www.oneredrobin.com/.  Her 'hood' is towelling to make the doll nice and textural for baby.

Would love any comments/ feedback!  Thanks for looking!

That's beautiful.  I'm in love with the catchy colour combination.

Did you machine stitch all the free hand stuff along the edges? (there's probably a technical term for that but I'm not au fait enough with the quilting world to be down with the lingo)

Shocked I am so impressed with that quilt!! The colours are so vivid and the pattern really simple and efficient! I've decided to make children quilts for a charity, but have never made any before. I think this one is so fabulous I must start right away!
Did you use a piecing pattern? And when you cut the fabric, do the edges have to follow the fabric's grain?
Thanks!

Yes, you just lower the feed dogs on your machine, put the darning foot on and kinda draw with your needle by moving the fabric.  It takes a bit of practice though, I'm only just getting the hang of it!  Thanks for your nice comments!

No pattern, I just cut the fabrics up into random width strips and then laid them out to decide on the layout.  Then I added the border to bring it up to size.  It helps a lot if the strips are roughly straight grain (prevents it being too distorted), but it isn't essential for them to be perfect.  Good luck with your quilt projects and thanks!!

I've done loads of free-hand stuff similar to that with my husky but I don't think I've ever seen it done on the quilt.  It really adds to the feel of it.

oh...that is so beautiful!! I am always so impressed when people quilt in patterns (i.e. quilting the flower shapes instead of straight lines) (I'm not a quilter so I don't know the terms, lol). And the doll is just fantastic. I would have loved her so much when I was a kid. Plus when she outgrows it she will treasure it because you made it for her.

Very lovely. I love the free hand quilting (the most I've aspired to so far is spirals) and the doll is so cute. What is her face made of?
