A hearty thanks to tamagotchi for her non-knit tutorial here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=72078.0

For whatever reason (there rarely is a logical reason) I felt that my September baby needed a fleecy Totoro hat for his birthday. It turned out really adorable!

I have measuring/ cutting issues, so despite following the directions for finding the dimensions for the hat, I still had to add the wide band along the bottom to make it fit correctly, and then I had to adjust the ear flaps because I'm a dunce, apparently. Instead of ties, I opted for a little chin strap to velcro on the opposite ear flap.

The hat itself is blue fleece. The eyes, pupils and nose are craft felt. The leaf is a printed cotton that I had horded away because I'm a fabric junkie, and the whiskers and mouth are fabric-painted on.

And because Daddy couldn't resist the allure of the Totoro hat...

Also, celebrate this momentous occasion with me: My first craft post! I love perusing and replying to others' posts, but am only just now getting around to posting mine!

Cutest thing I have seen all day.

I don't have a baby, and the 6 yr old won't go near stuff like this.  May have to make one for myself... heh heh heh

Thanks! I thought so too. Plus now he's less likely to untie/ yank it off/ strangle himself with it.

My big boy (nearly seven) probably would have been thrilled with the *idea* of a Totoro hat, but not so much with the real thing. Daddy even seemed to think it might be cool, but I just don't see him wearing such a thing. And I was tempted, let me tell you, to make one for myself. Just seemed more practical to make it for the one member of the family who oozes cuteness no matter what I put on him. :-)

You definitely should! It turns out so well for the fairly small amount of work put into it.

So cute! I love the leaf!

Thanks! Me too! Though, I think that after it was all said and done, the face is my favorite part. Especially the nose. And the mouth. And the big eyes... no wait....

I love when a project works!

It came out great!! Very, very cute!
I have to say I'm glad to hear I am not the only bonehead with measuring cutting issues. I think it might be a calculation issue really, but i end up with things ALL WRONG.

and in this case, you cant' tell that there is anythign wrong with the hat.  It looks like its supposed to be that way.
