I am trying to find a free topdown beret pattern. Thanks in advance for your response. I have Barbara Walker's pattern for the class cap but she does not mention how it can be turned into a beret. Thanks in advance for your responses.

I just ran across one this morning, ironically on this board - http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=204658.0 and the pattern here - http://knitonthenet.com/issue1/patterns/clochestashhat/

Okay, it's not quite a beret, but it looks like you could leave off the brim, inc to the size you want and do the lower edge in ribbing. It's knit flat, but you could knit in the round.
