Shag  Bag  Tutorial___
thanks Chrissiemags for the inspiration… and feel free to let me  know my mistakes.

Good luck  reading  my babble  hope it  makes sense.  Some  will  make  more  sense  when youhave the pieces in hand.
Now  are  you brave  enough to  try it?  LOL

First pick 3 different materials. And cut one piece of poster board in a 5X5 inch square.
Cut 19 of the lining pieces (use the poster board as your guide to mark)
Cut 9 of one of  the other materials
Cut 10 of the other material
Here is what  you should  have so far.

Figure what types of handles  you want. Woodened, beaded, cloth, handle or strap? Adjustable?
If you want a cloth handle or strap follow me. If using  any other kind you  will know  when and  where to add what  you need.
Also cut 19 pieces of  stiff interfacing 4 ½ X 4 ½  inches  (you can also use low loft cotton batting for a more quilted look).

Ok for the fabric handles or strap cut 2 pieces of 2 different materials  3 inches wide and as long as you want your strap. (do 4 of each for handles and  you can make them a bit more narrow)
Sew  right sides together and turn. Iron and  sew 1/8 inch  from edges to secure.  If you like a stiffer handle you can also add interfacing. I made one long strap like this.

The green  is the underside and the print is the top of the strap.  Lay aside.

Take one lining piece
         One interfacing
         One outer piece
Make a sandwich wrong sides together like  this

If  you  want to add the extra step and make the quilters X you can,  I don’t cause I am lazy like that.  But here  is  what it would  look like if  you want to.

Do all remaining pieces  the same way. You will end up with 2 stacks one having 9 of one material and one having 10 of the other material. Like this

All of which have outer, interfacing, and lining pieces.

OK now take one from 10 count stack and one from 9 count stack and place lining sides together. Stitch along one edge should look like  this

on right side  add another from the 10 count stack. Lay that  aside and   make 2 more  strips  like  that.  Now  you have  this.

Take one square from the nine count stack and sew to one from the 10 count stack. Then add one more from the 9 count stack. Make 2  of these strips.  Like so

So now  you have  a  total of 5 strips.  Lay them all aside and lets  make a  pocket.
Take 2 pieces of material 14 X 5 ¼ inches place right sides together and sew along one long side. Turn  and iron  wrong sides together.
Sew along top edge for durability.  It  should  look like  this.

Lay aside.
Now take one of each of the strips you made before and lay them  lining sides together  and sew along one  long  side. Will look  like  this when sewn
Front

Back

Make 2 of  those.

On one of those panels attach the pocket raw edges lined with raw edges. Stitch along bottom and sides.

Also careful  stitch along seam lines where the squares were sewn together to create the pockets.

Now  you have 2 panels that look like  this. One  has pockets

(in this pic the pocketed one is on the left and the one on the right shows what the fronts look like)

Almost done. Take the left over squares and sew together. Making  these.

Add each of these to the sides of one panel like  this

Take the last 3 piece strip and center on the bottom of that panel like  this.

Now add the  other panel to the sides like  this

Close up the bottom.

Now  you have  this

Sew around the top edge adding in handles, straps  what ever  you chose.   Also add in Velcro for closure or a  button like  this

Throw it  in the  washer and dryer  for the shag look and trim  any extra  threads.
Any questions or comments feel free.  And please post pics of the bags  you make….

AHHHHHH!  Cheesy The pink and brown John Deere! I have some of that pink and brown in my stash....m.u.s.t. find pink and brown polka dots!

do you clip the edges of your "frayed" sides to encourage more fraying?

Love them all!

Awww, you make me blush...see I told you they were addicting LOL
Ok so I can inspire you with a simple rag bag and you inspire me with your pursettes, aprons (I have 2 killer ones, a craft one that is to DIE for and one to wear in the kitchen that I LOVE LOVE LOVE), booty bags, and I can't forget your snow monster who sits on the shelf in my sewing room and keeps me cool when the seam ripper and the not so pleasant words come out LOL
aaaagggg  and  the  true  master at work.  great  job on  all.  now the  ladies see  why  you  inspire me!

Yes shorty3boys I clip the exposed seams prior to washing, this will help add fray to the frayed edge.  Keep in mind this is a PAIN IN THE BUTT!  I have special scissors to help with this they do not have regular scissor handles (with the hole to put your fingers into) they have a "straight" handle and you hold them like you would hold a pair of pliers if that makes sense. Feel free to ask if it doesn't make sense.

hi, I love your John Deere purse too cute .My only question is that your purses look a bit more thicker more like a quilt than the instruction given,Did you use something different in between your lining and the front pieces other than low loft batting or interfacing??thanks again love the purses all very cute.,

Thanks for posting the directions - that's a really fun bag and the best part is you don't have to worry about turning it when you're done!

I also really like the craft apron - why haven't I thought of that before? I lose my scissors and pins all the time when I'm sewing.

ok  sorry I haven't responded and thanks for all the great comments.  yes Chrissiemaggs  adds the extra thickness and it gives it that extra  something.  I  think she uses batting but not 100% sure.   you could use fleece I would guess. you jsut sut it a bit smallet that the sguares and sandwhich it all together before you sew the pieces together.

I belive chrissiemaggs sandwhiches each square (theres teh quilters X on them)  then does each square  as outside, padding and lining as all one piece.   then you are making the sides and front and back and handles and just placing it all together.
If anyone wants I can attempt  a tute that way this summer. (I will need at least a month if not more got too much on the plate now)
