i'm attempting to improvise a knitted "doll" pattern, but i wanted her to be sort of anatomically correct so she needs boobies, but i can't figure out how i would create them.

i am knitting her in the round on dpn's

maybe there is some sort of stitch that would look like boobies?

How anatomically correct does she need to be?  Like, do you need two clearly distinct breasts or would it be okay if the chest just went out a bit?  I would suggest just using some short rows like you would to create a dart on a sweater--you would have to knit the piece flat for a little bit at that point.  Alternatively you could knit a flat chested doll, then pick up a little circle of stitches on each side of the chest and work a set of decreases similar to what you would do for the top of a hat (you could even put a little extra stuffing in if you require a well-endowed doll).  That probably would be to fiddly on a really tiny doll though.

not very correct. i like both of those ideas,
i'm having hard time picturing how the short rows would look, maybe i have to try it on a swatch to see? they don't need to be two very distinct breasts, just an area sticking out would be fine.

the second idea is fantastic and i will try it out in my swatch to see how hard it would be, because it will be pretty small.

i have tried a bobble stich but i think it looks too sloppy.

thanks for the ideas!

On the knitty surprise issue there's a scarf with boob bobbles.  This is a PDF that comes with a few other projects (shedir hat, etc.) http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTsurpriseintro.html

The short rows would be like a little heel. How about single purl stitches for nipples?

Bobble stitch!

Depending on how large the doll is.. That URL has instructions for smaller ones, or as previously suggested in the Boobies Scarf from Knitty.
