So the website is: http://personal.mem.bellsouth.net/d/r/drv1913/0204.html

I have been wanting to make a coptic bound journal so badly since seeing all of them on craftster but all the tutorials for the coptic stitch looked so complicated and difficult.  The tutorial at this website is the easiest I've found by far.  You shouldn't need any new materials, all the ones used for this journal are things you can find around your house.  As for the "cardboard", the backing of pads of paper are perfect.  Anyway here is the one I made.  I'm telling you it was so easy, it took a while for the first one, but it was easy nonetheless.  Everyone I love is getting a journal for the holidays.

PEACE

I don't think that would be Kosher...  I can e-mail the "owner" of the site though and see if it's possible considering the situation.  Or maybe I can entice her to post her tutorial on Craftster... I'll let you know.  For now I would just try again...

great... can't wait to see it.  Hey if you can, look at the website I gave in the first post.  Her "stitch-by-numbers" method of coptic stitch is great.

Gah, thank you so much for that! I lost all of my bookmarks a month and a half ago and have been searching high and low for that website. Thank you again!

Anyway, awesome job on your book, I love it!

Well, Ican't get the website to pull up right now, but I think I have an idea of what you're talking about!!!!

Here is a journal I made:

I made it a while back for the circle journal swap I'm hosting here on Craftster.  I painted the cover paper myself (white 80lb. artist paper painted streaky black on purpose with a maple leaf stamp in copper ink).  Anyway, I didn't take pictures of the endpapers, but it's the same as the cover paper.

So everybody hang in tight.  I just got an e-mail from the owner of the site and she says it's a bandwith problem which she is going to fix this weekend...  So everyone be patient.  We will all be coptic stitching our hearts out in no time!

That's an awesome journal! I love the music paper <3
How do you alter the measurements in the tutorial, say, to make the inside papers 8 1/2 by 5 1/2? How would you alter all the other measurements?
Good job!

YAY!

So, I saw this post a few hours ago and decided that I needed a "Books Read" book where I could put entries of books I have read with info from the book into the journal. How awesome was that website the instructions came from?! I loved it, so I made my own. I used fabric instead of paper for the cover, and just glued it on. It looks semi-professional, I'd say. I am very happy with the way it turned out and definitely will be making more. Hey, I could even be up for my first swatch (switch, trade thing I never could get a hold of)!
Here is one of my blogs (one that I almost never use as you can see by the last entry) with the picture:

and here is the picture (I hope this works!):

That's funny, I just made a book like that for my mom for christmas! And I used fabric too.
I actually found the coptic stitch incredibly easy! I did it with fishing line, and there were quite a few knots, but once I figured that out, I got it done in a flash! Thanks for the great tutorial!

Rockiegirl, I can't see your picture -_-

KittyKurl: I'm sorry! I just don't know how to post photos very well on here. Go to the link I provided. That should work.

I've made three so far. I put up another journal on that blog. I love making these!

j_rabbette: I LOVE the sheet music cover!  I found some fabric just like that which I'm planning to make a journal with...someday...but yours really is beautiful.

rockiegirl: The second journal on your blog is fabulous!  I mean, the other one looks great too, but I adore the flower!  Did you stitch onto the fabric before gluing it to the cardboard?

To anyone who's afraid of the coptic stitch: I put off learning to bind journals because it looked so hard in that diagram.  But once I finally sat down with it and did it, it's so easy!  I've made several now and they always turn out looking very nice.

KittyKurl: I'm sure yours is amazing. You should post some pics of it!

recycled_earth: Thanks! For that brown journal, I didn't use cardboard, but that foam sheet stuff that are usually for kid crafts. I found some just lying around in a package I didn't open from the closing of a craft store from a couple years ago. It's easier to cut and shape than cardboard is. The cardboard I used for that plaid one was the back of a used ruled notebook. I wouldn't suggest that cardboard for journals because mine has become wonky, probably because I used too much glue. But that foam stuff is amazing! Here is link of what it looks like if any of you don't know what I'm talking about:
http://i19.ebayimg.com/02/i/02/08/40/9a_2.JPG

recycled _earth: I glued the back paper to the foam as well as the fabric cover. Then I stitched around the edges and the (wretched) flower. Then I glued the pages to the whole thing. Et voila!

I haven't tried to do a paper cover, mainly because I don't have any cool stiffish paper, also because I like fabric too much and have more of a variety.

I'm not really afraid of the coptic stitch, it's just that it looks really confusing to me. XD
