Scrappy Square Quilt

Tonight, after twenty minutes of struggling with a petulant sewing machine and a final triumphant cry of "I'LL SEE YOU IN HELL, KENMORE 12116690!" I've finished my scrap quilt.

It feels like I've been working on this damn thing forever, but in reality it has spent most of the four months since the first rough sketch strewn about the floor in my spare room, waiting patiently for the day when the effort required for me to step over it finally outweighed the effort required to get it finished. Of course technically it's not really finished because it's only a quilt top, but the sheer size of the thing prevents me from quilting it on my machine. It's going to have to wait until I drum up the money to get it quilted professionally before it can finally become self-aware and try to enslave humanity.

The original brief (see how much better that sounds than 'half-baked notion') was to use up all the little scraps of fabric that litter my house so that I may once again frolic with abandon without stubbing toes or scraping shins on various boxes and overspilling drawers of material. This meant it was always destined to become a riot of colour, but it's turned out not so much a riot as a full scale turf war. This pleases me.

The major upside of it's general visual offensiveness is that when visitors to our house catch sight of it and exclaim "Dear god, what is that monstrosity?!" my lip can quibble for a moment and then I can run from the room and throw my sobbing self dramatically down on a chaise longue like a 40's starlet while the husband explains to an uncomfortably silent room that I slaved over "that monstrosity" for months.

absolutely fantastic, i feel you with the kenmore trauma. i did a mermaid costume a few years ago swearing at the maching all the way through!

This is very beautiful. All of your hard work and slavery has paid off.

I think everyone should be lucky enough to have a quilt like this in their house.

Thank you  I'm pretty proud of it - I messed up a few times but for only my second quilt ever I can live with those mistakes.

I'm so glad it's done though. I imagine my neighbours are too, after being subjected to every swearword in existence and a few new ones I made up specially for the occasion.

At some point I have to figure out what to back it with, whether it needs a border or not and where on earth to get it quilted, but right now I need a celebratory beer!

I'm going to stick to knitting at least until my masters is done though!  haha!

Now that is a quilt. I think it's fantastic. However, I'm having trouble with scale. I can't tell if it's on a bed in a small room, and is a regular sized quilt, or if it's in a large raised room & is a auto dealership flag sized quilt.
I'm equally impressed regardless.
