what about coat hanger wire in conjunction with some plastic tubing or a  thin piece of bamboo? you could thread the plastic/ bamboo on to the wire at the end. then i would suggest you wrap the whole thing in florists' tape. that was the other thing i was going to suggest- wrap the wire in florists' tape.it gives it a little bit of grip so it won't slide out so easily

Featherweight boning? the sort of stuff used for corsets? Strong and flexible, but it might not work if you want joints. or certain curves.

fascinating idea, would love to see pics when you pull it off. good luck!
