My friend (and I) both love the musical Wicked sooo for her twenty first I planned to make her a reversible bag, one side inspired by Elphaba and one side by Glinda. I made both the bags but when I came to putting them together, they were slightly different sizes so rather than compromise the appearing of the whole thing, I made two seperate bags! this also solved the worry I had that if she was using it with the Elphaba side out, the pretty white and pink glinda side might get dirty (admit it, the inside of a handbag can get pretty grubby!). I finished hand sewing the lining while on the train to the party (it was a three hour trip, its not like i was rushing at the last minute!) so these are crappy taken-on-a-train photos...
so here is the elphaba bag, made with green linen and black freehand machine embroidery:

and the back

and the Glinda bag, I screenprinted the design for the front, a shoe because she has so many in her room, and bubbles for her preferred mode of travel

the back is a broderie anglais with a ribbon which actually matched the screenprinted shoe exactly, although the colour appears different in the photo:

she loved them and picked up on the inspiration straight away!

I love this--they connect to the story without being too "gimicky" or commericalized.
