I created these shoes out of some charity shop plain white canvas shoes I bought for two quid then fabric penned. I ironed them to seal the ink (which was a pain!) and then sealed it with some shoe spray I bought from a shoe shop.
The picture on them is from 'Wham' by Roy Lichtenstein.

Here they are, minus their laces:

Now I am inspired to buy some cheap-o shoes and dress them up.

How well do you think they will withstand snow and wet?

Wow, that is my DH's fave Lichtenstein piece. The acuracy and detail you have achieved there is amazing - can't believe how well you have scaled the images to fit.

Did you freehand the ink work or did you use some kind of stencil to transfer?

I would worry so much about ruining these I'd be afraid to wear them!!

Hands down, best painted/drawn shoes I've seen.  The level of detail is amazing.  Having done a pair of shoes with fabric markers I can't imagine how you were able to do that.

Awesome!

omg I am jealous of your feet.

I didn't even see the actual mention of Roy... I was looking at these and going "man this looks like a Lichtenstein!"  And it was.  Smiley  Good work!

Cheers guys!

In response to your questions:

They should withstand reasonably well to getting wet as I've ironed the canvas and sealed the ink in but I wouldn't recommend wearing them on a very wet day (which I wouldn't anyway because they're canvas and my feet would get wet). I can't tell you exactly, however, as I gave them away to a friend.

No, I didn't use a stencil, I just copied them freehand. It was easier than I expected, actually. And having fabric pens with fine nibs helped enormously.

I've got a few more pairs of canvas shoes (not exactly in the same style- these ones have rubber toe caps) that I want to decorate so if any of you lovely people have any ideas of designs/pieces of art/comic books I could draw on them, I would very much appreciate it.

so cute!  I have been wanting to decorate a basic pair of keds in the style of saddle styles, since I saw a tutorial in neet magazine (neetmagazine.com). It looks super easy to do the saddle shoes - which is good.  I could never get my lines as clean as yours!

d'oh!

Years ago (and I do mean YEARS) one of the major manufacturers of 'tennies/sneakers/whatever you call them where you live' shoes made some that looked like saddle shoes.  They came in a variety of colors and were apparently used by lots of cheerleading squads.

I had this pair of red ones I wore ALL the time.  I was so sad when I finally had to give them up.  I looked all over and they weren't being made any more.

I saw these:  http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafting/article/0,,HGTV_3352_1399573,00.html
But I'm hard on my shoes - those would work for a costume, but they probably wouldn't hold up to my abuse on a regular basis.

I have painted shoes - how could this not have occured to me??

Thanks kristenp - one more thing to add to my list.  Hmmm, red again?  Maybe basic black?   Grin Grin
