I'm on a quest to recreate a hat my boyfriend lost years ago. I've never seen it in person, only photos and nostalgic "That was my favorite hat." I have plenty of hat experience, but can't really be certain as to what this hat is made out of/the pattern (or at least the stitch) used for it. Any suggestions (including gauge/type of yarn, colors, stitch, size, pattern, etc.) would be very appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Looks like a 1x1 rib (k1, p1) in a chunky yarn.  There are free patterns on the net for similar hats. http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/60311.html
