Headband/hat hybrid for keeping dreads under control *now with vague pattern!*
«

I am still a slow knitter so I whipped this up just to practice. It's nothing but stockinette and 2x2 and 1x1 rib, seamed together up the back because I didn't have any circulars small enough. And it does an AWESOME job of holding them back, I hula hooped and partied until 4 a.m. and it didn't even try to slip off!
ACTION SHOT!
I cast on 60 stitches, I'm not sure what yarn this is but it's a wool/acrylic blend, sort of on the chunky side.
I did 4 rows of k1,p1 (duh, can't think of the name of the stitch...) to keep it from rolling
About 15 rows of stockinette
*About 6 rows of 2x2 rib
4 rows of stockinette, and decrease by 2 sts at each end on the first row
repeat from *
About 15 rows of 1x1 rib, bind off
Very basic, but I like the blocky pattern it makes when stretched over my head. The one complication is that the bind-off is a little tight so it's hard to put the dreads through. How can I make the bind-off row as elastic as the last row of ribbing? I thought that binding off in pattern would help but it really didn't.

For a looser BO, use needles a size or two larger, and BO in the rib pattern.

That's true, too. If you don't have dreads you probably want to make it a little more narrow. The hard part is getting it on- I might make the next one lace up! If anyone else has made one yet I'd love to see it.

I decided to make mine in the same color so it would match a lot of my knitted winter accesories (none of my hats and scarves match)
Great pattern. Thanks for sharing. If you're not on ravelry I can put it on there for you if you want. Just let me know.

Very cool! I don't have dreads, but I do have 'spacious' hair and need an alternative to ponytail holders. I'll give this pattern a whirl
Thanks for the pattern!

It looks sooooo good! I miss my dreads so much! I actually learned to knit and crochet so I could make stuff for them... and now that they are gone...well....my knitting and crocheting output is quite lessened. Boo.
but yours are gorgeous!!

Man, I have no idea what size needles I used, but the gauge is about 4 stitches per inch.

very cute! btw, a nice loose bind off to try is elizabeth zimmerman's sewn bind off. basically, you leave a long tail, thread it on a darning needle, then go two stiches forward, one stitch back, and repeat.
