Tote Bag Question - Updated with new links in 4th post

I'm pretty new to sewing, so please forgive this question if it sounds stupid.  What is the difference in making a tote bag this way http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=52143.0 and this way http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=29876.0.  The first takes five pieces to construct the body of the tote (not including the lining).  The second looks like one piece of fabric folded at the bottom and the sides sewn up.  (I guess the tote could be made similar to the Jordy where there are two pieces for each side of the bag too.)  Is there a difference in the functionality of the tote or is it just the shape and amount of time it takes to sew?

The tote with five pieces has more room inside (due to the side gussets/pannels) than the other.  The other would less roomy---that's basically the only difference.  You'll find that there are MANY methods/patterns to make purses (or really any sewn article, including clothing), and it's fun to experiment with different techniques and find what works for you.

 I do them both ways because they just look a little different to me. It change things up. Definitely doing it the second way is a lot fewer steps. I've had people who specifically prefer one or the other, though they don't seem that different in final shape.

Thanks for the replies.  Here is the result.  I made the tote bag the second way and made it huge.
