Hi All

I'm looking for a fabric store in Vancouver. I'm convinced there was one around 5th Ave a bit east of Granville. However I can't find any trace of it - even though I bought fabric there a few years ago. Has any one heard of it? I can't have hallucinated the entire store.   Undecided

Also has any one been to Gala fabrics on Granville - what's it like?

There's a great discount fabric store at 41st and Fraser; that's the only one I've visited so far but I've seen many everywhere. Look in the yellow pages.

oooh, you're gonna have fun!

and apparently they take debit now, so you can spend even more! (for YEARS they took cash and cheques only, it was so irritating) just keep in mind that they have really sucky hours - i think they open at 9:15 and close at 5:15 and they're not open sundays. i'd hate for you to miss going there while you're here!

(the whole basement isn't bargain fabrics - even better - it's NOTIONS! they have a room in the basement full of bargain fabrics, and you can find incredible deals, but the entire rest of the basement is notions - rows and rows of zippers in every colour and length you can imagine, a ton of old stock trims - pom pom balls anyone? - a million buttons, rows of elastic and ribbon, etc. it's so awesome!)

glasgowgirl, i think the fabric store around 5th ave a bit east of granville was a fabricland - it was in a little mini mall, a few blocks from 7-11? it's a starbucks now, they closed that store.

immortalchild, the fabric store you're talking about is called textile clearance house, it's on fraser between 40th and 41st, across from the graveyard (i think the address is 5500 fraser actually). it's a fabricland, but they don't like to admit it, and it's great. everything's less than $10 a yard, and you can find some great deals. they get in a lot of neat stuff that fabricland doesn't, and they're way cheaper. they're open til 8 m-f, till 6 on saturdays and till 5 on sundays. get the $5 membership, it's totally worth it!

there's also roccos at fraser and about 46th or so. it's so amazing, especially if you want fancier fabrics at decent prices. they don't have much selection of cottons, etc, but their fancy stuff is so gorgeous! they also sell saris for $15-$30 each, and they have 6.5 yards of fabric in them. and i've found stuff there thast no one else in town had - like fishnet and fantastic spandex for costumes!

and there are quite a few little fabric stores on main street around main in "little india" with really fabulous stuff. check them all out before you start actually buying - the prices vary quite a bit between stores!

i have purchased WAY too much fabric over the years! (that's why i can barely walk around in my studio!) i used to do theatre costuming, and then i did burlesque costuming, so i've got a pretty good idea of what's available where in the lower mainland.

and i used to live a few blocks from TCH, plus i worked there for a little while years ago (crappy place to work, great place to shop!), so i've got a pretty good idea of what they carry!

i also like fabricana in richmond (the coquitlam store's staff always seems snotty to me) for things you can't find anywhere else - like expensive/brand name quilting cottons, odd notions, bridal (though i haven't checked gala - the parking in that part of town has always deterred me!), and basic spandex. their flannelette is usually better quality too.

and there's a fabulous family owned fabric store in surrey that i ADORE - i live a few blocks away, so i'm in there all the time and they're so awesome. it's got a ton of stuff too. it's called save on fabrics.

and if anyone's into quilting, there's a sweet little store in ladner called the quilted bear - their staff are SO MUCH NICER than any other quilting store i've ever been to! (i hate wineberries in surrey!)

ooh thanks for the reminder crafty_dame! I almost forgot about the cash only thing. I went there for the first time in June but I had flown out and was backpacking so I didn't buy any fabric. This time I'm driving in a tour van! woo!

Wow, dressew sounds amazing. I'm moving to Vancouver in April for a while, so I've been having a wee search for fabric stores and that one is right on the street where I'll be studying! Hooray!

Ooh DressSew. Terrible place that is. My schools only a few blocks away, and my busstop is right across the street. I've bought waaaay too much fabric and notions since I started semester in January. It's seriously fabulous. And right around the corner theres a big button store (You can find any buttons or clasps there) and if you walk towards Main there is a little fabric supply store which mainly does bulk orders but theirs some lovely silks and chiffons if you need more than 3 metres.
