based on:

what i came up with:

pattern:
2 skeins of bernat alpaca chunky  (i would NOT suggest this yarn to anyone, it sheds like a horror) or any chunky yarn about the same gauge:
   •   3-1/2 ounces (100 grams) 120 yards
   •   4"=15 stitches on size 10 needles

-CO 80  sts on size 4 circs(this was for a friend with thick hair and a big head, so i would suggest starting with any needle/hat band that you know works for your head or subtracting like 10 stitches from this for a smaller head)
-K10rows in 2x2 ribbing
-Switch to size 8 circs K1 M1 all the way around
-Knit 3 rows
-**P15 K1 ** Repeat between asteriks for infinity rows. basically you are making a verical rib with the knit stitch and large patches of purl between them.
-knit 3 rows and switch back to p15k1
-work for about 8-12" depending on how big you want it.
-k2tog all around for 2 rows
-break yarn leaving a 12" tail. weave tail through live sts and pull tight.

-sew on a big fat pom pom (i used patons shetland chunky for it)

-be contrary and find a garden

COOL!

I love the Secret Garden.  And I've always loved Mary's winter hat.  Is it cold enough to wear out where you live?  I know I would be dying to wear it all the time, but I'd probably get heat stroke.

clacksou13:
the yarn was mostly acrylic (and didn't hold onto the alpaca fiber at all, hence the shedding) so it shouldn't be DREADFULLY warm. Just to be safe though, it gets below zero here where i live Smiley
