I've been considering this as my first sweater. I am dying to knit a sweater but I don't want to try something too frustrating! May I inquire as to which size you knitted, since you said it was turning out too large? It looks really nice in a solid color!

I made the xs (27") one.  It might be my own gauging error that made it so big, since I started it months before I got to the body part.  Also, I like things to be pretty fitted (otherwise I look like a stick Tongue). 

But yeah, I think this would make a good first sweater. Smiley
