I like gourds because even someone like me can grow them. I kill most plants by looking at them. Gourds you just plant and leave alone for a year. I can handle that. I made the birdhouse for a friend. The roof on it is copper but you can't tell so much in the awful pic. The santa was something I saw in a decorative painting magazine. No idea which magazine but the artist's name was Susan Stamillio. Her's was on a big plate. I loved the colors and folksy look to him. My friend loves folk and old world santas so I thought this would be a good present for her.

Birdhouses out of gourds are nothing new to me, most people have them where I'm from. Just not painted ones. And yes, they are a like a pumpkin. You let them dry for a long time and they get very hard. They also get digustingly mouldy! I spray them with soap and bleach and scrub them with a Chore Boy type scrubber pad. Let them dry and you're ready to do whatever you want to them.

Thank you. The birdhouse is over 4 years old now and still looks like new. It's been hanging under a large oak tree in Florida for 4 years. On my grandparent's property, there are some gourd birdhouses (not painted tho) that are older than I am. That's pretty old!

Thank you so much for your positive comments. It makes me feel better to know that other people like my stuff. Nobody's perfect or good at everything. I may be good at the crafty thing but I can't cook and am about as domestic as a wildebeast. I've tried selling my stuff before, with mixed results. We had a store here for a bit but this area is dreadful. Everyone wants a Rolex but can't afford a Timex. The things I love to make don't sell that well and the things that do sell hurt my crafty soul to make. My greatest wish is to be able to make a living (and enough to pay a housekeeper!) doing what I like best. So far it hasn't happened.

You should sell these online. People will buy them! No need to run a store, just set up a website, etc.

Thanks David. I am in the process of making new (and not cheesy website) to sell my stuff. It's taking me forever but I'm still plugging away at it.
