I found this obnoxious red sparrow fabric on clearance at Joann and a happy island print in the remnants. Together they make this messenger bag:

Inside:

It has sheets of plastic (made from Target bags) for reinforcement in the front and back. The straps are from a couple of old camera bags.
I didn't use a pattern, but i used other bags as a reference.
So overall, it just cost my time and about $5 in clearance fabric.

Not bad, eh?

**more pics**
Me wearing it, to display how it sits. (it's full of books here, as it will be when it's used)
