I'm sorry I can't find a better picture, but I want to make a 1940s military side cap a bit like this for a costume, but I haven't got a clue how to start? Does anyone know how I could make one?  Huh

I don't know how to make it, but I wore the same style in Army JROTC in High school. Try looking for them at military supply stores for an idea on putting one together.

You're welcome but uhm Thank me when I find it. I have a lot of crafting stuff to go through in order to relocate it.  Roll Eyes

EDIT: Found it! It's not qute the same as the one in the pic but the pattern should be easily adjustable for that.

Folkwear pattern #135 has that cap-- change the fabric from civilian to military, and you're good to go.

BTW, it tickles me that your model is an officer!

Known as Army Surplus in the UK, but not all do vintage (this isn't a current UK army hat style).

Or if the pattern thing doesn't work out, search 'side hat' on ebay Smiley

I also need to make one of these for my girlfriend's halloween costume!
(I need to make it so that the khaki colour matches the khaki of the uniform I am making. If I buy it it won't match, and I'm to picky for that.)

I would also appreciate a pattern!

I know this is old but I found this and remembered this post.

It's not exactly the same b/c this one has a brim but it can be omitted

If I remember correctly, the top is a lozenge shape (oval with pointy ends). The rest is more or less straight. You'll have to shape it a little to get the curved part. The straight part might have some light interfacing. I can't remember what is cut on the bias, and what straight. Put some grosgrain ribbon around the inside at the bottom for a band.

This is the kind of cap my father wore during WWII.

I've found hats to be deceptive in that they take way more fabric than you think they're going to, just so you're warned.
