For people in the
US Handy info from penlowe:
The US Post Office considers a Letter to be under two ounces and in a rectangular envelope that is no thicker than1/4 inch- that's what goes through the automated machine on it's own. 2 ounces is roughly three standard sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 paper in a size A envelope (4 1/8 x 9 1/2, your regular buisness size envelope).
Under two ounces but thick (like the smallest bubble mailer) is the next standard postage, I think 56 cents. Square envelopes also fall into this category. Standard size but over 2 ounces converts to regular first class postage rates.
Consumer Reports studied postage costs between UPS, FedEX, USPS & a couple others. They found anything under 2 pounds USPS was the best value. Smaller carriers were better locally, especially with large or unusual sized packages.
For those in
AUS: A envelope of dimensions descriped above, will cost about $2.00 as long as you dont make it bulky. It must still classify as a letter. They put it through a cardboard slot and if it doesnt fit you'll have to pay extra, or remove something from it. Don't attach stamps because that means extra GST. There are green customs slips at the post office. Fill them in before you go and you will save a lot of time. Be as specific as you can about whats on the inside of the package or customs will rip it to shreds.
The heavier the objects the more likely you are to pay but i send jewellery and paintings on calico and have never had a problem
