I want a bright rich red sooo bad.  The henna thing scares me a bit though...my hair is long enough for me to sit on the ends, so if it turns out wonky it would take a long long time to grow out.

I'm also a little worried about it's staying power (assuming that I love the color).  I've had some gorgeous results with various red chemical dyes, but my hair won't hold color.  It's not the more normal fade away over a few weeks - name brand permanent dyes are gone within three days.  Three days!  It's rather heartbreaking to spend the money for 2-3 boxes of dye, fall madly in love with the color, then have it disappear.  (It's a problem I mentioned on Craftster before, if you're curious as to the results of red dye on my hair.)

Can anybody give a comparison between chemical dye and henna, in respects to how your color lasts?

i agree with sarchan about henna. its sooo nice. mine turned out like this http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y228/onmytoez4life/P1010157.jpg
i henna it all the time and its so nice and soft. <3 for henna.

VERY cool! Will henna go OVER dye?  I haven't seen my natural color since 1991!

And just a note....I have been dying my hair red since then and red fades the most of any color. Every hairdresser I have gone to since 1991 (and it has been A LOT) have said the same thing!

Aliastriona_angerbo da: the henna i use says that using some sort of lemon solution to get the red out. henna cant really turn out wonky unless you leave it on too long. my natural hair color is kinda mousy brown with subtle red high lights and thats the color it turns out when i leave the henna on for an hour.

PinkyK: ive never dyed my hair, but the box says that henna is usable on color treated hair and i assume that means dyed. and i actually havent noticed any fading, the only reason i re-henna it is because of yucky roots.

good luck~

Very cool!  I think I'll give it a shot next time my roots are showing! Thank you all for answering my questions. I'm a little type A/anal about my hair.

I use two sqaures, and that is just right ... if it is much longer I'd say three just to be safe.  Good luck & Have fun!
