If you need materials, or have some to give away, join your local www.Freecycle.org.

The objective is to keep things out of landfills, and that includes half-used bags of plaster-of-Paris, craft paper, yarn, fabric, molding, and whatever else you're finished with.

I started embroidering recently (near Pasadena, CA) and wanted to fill my meager collection of embroidery floss with other colors. I decided to put out a request via Freecycle in the Arcadia, South Pasadena, Burbank/Glendale, North Hollywood, and La Caada branches. As a result, I now have a huge stash of multiple colors of floss, AND a few storage containers with many spools as well. All for the asking!

Freecycle is worldwide, and some cities have membership in the tens of thousands. You can request all kinds of items, but the rules state that your first post must be an OFFER. I gave away a basketball backboard, a bookshelf, an office chair I was no longer using, some board games, and other items. Everything you part with must be free.

After your first offer in each group, you are allowed to make requests.

Freecycle is a Yahoo! group. To become a member, first go to Yahoo! and get a Yahoo! ID. Then go to the main site, find the group(s) you wish to join, and request membership from the moderator of the site. You'll receive an email accepting you into the group, and you're on your way.

ALSO:

If there is a Habitat for Humanity ReStore in your area, you're in luck. The items there are not free, but the prices are generally very good. They have items donated by homeowners and contractors that fall in the hardware store genre. Some stores carry paint, others don't. Most carry new and used doors, windows, wood, bathtubs, doorknobs, lighting fixtures, hinges, plumbing supplies, sprinkler parts, tools, tile, cabinets, furniture, large appliances, etc. It depends on what is donated.

If you donate, you'll get a tax deduction receipt. If you purchase things such as tile, mirrors, glass, or anything else, you'll get a great deal on your craft supplies. The proceeds go toward HFH projects. Clean out your garage and see what you can give to HFH - then go shopping for your craft supplies, too.

Enjoy,

The Frugal CraftGirl
