inspired by
this skirt, I decided to make a wrap skirt. mine is reversible like the original, but just black on both sides (I had a lot of black; it's actually two different shades of black as it turns out). I did a half circle (not a full circle, but it's still very nice and full!), making sure that the inner circle would be greater than my waist measurement. it was fairly simple and easy and came out very well. a very wearable piece of clothing to fuel my love of skirts!
here are the ties. I made it to tie in the back, regardless of which side it opens on.
here is a picture of my not so lovely hole for the tie. it would be better if my sewing machine did a proper, normal zigzag.
(and please ignore the bag of trash on the floor of my kitchen. it's too full for its can but not yet full to be taken out. I'm not a pig, I promise!)
ok, here's the tutorial!
cut out two half circles with smaller circles cut out as the waist. make sure that the arc length of the small circle will be about 1.3 times as large as your waist measurement. to figure that out, the arc length = pi x radius of small circle (pi = approx 3.14). the length of your skirt is the same as the distance between the two arcs (or the length of the straight sides).
you'll also need to cut out four pieces for the ties (you can cut out two that are twice as wide and fold them over if you are using the same fabric on both sides). mine were approximately 3 in x 26 in.
place your two half circles with the good sides together (the light blue indicates the wrong side, dark is right side). the offset of the two half circles is just to show how the sides face each other, make sure you're actually line up.
stitch around the two arcs along the dotted lines.
place two of your rectangle ties with the good sides together and stitch around three sides, leaving one of the short sides open. turn right side out and press.
place the ties so that they are inside the skirt (the red indicates the portion of the ties that are between the layers of the skirt), leaving about an inch sticking up. sew up the sides, making sure to leave a hole in one of the sides. turn the skirt right side out through this hole and press.
top stitch around the entire skirt, sewing the hole closed as you go. stitch a large buttonhole about a third of the way around the waist (hold it up on you to figure out where it should go) for the bottom tie to come through.
and you're done!
