I used Alafoss Lopi, for that ultimate fresh-from-the-slums yarn look. I thought it'd be super-scratchy but it's nice and warm. I found a good orange for it, so I guess it depends on where you go.

Ah, I hadn't looked at Alafoss Lopi.  Just Reynolds Lopi.  Their red is spot-on, but the orange is a little pink.

I skein of each does me for TWO hats. With extra rust red left over, since it's only used for the earflaps.

torn between trying to track down lopi/ lambs pride in australia (neither of which i've ever seen), and bustin' my student budget for a kit.

i think it's going to be the latter. the pre-made pompom is also a temptation (i have too many bad memories of my grade 4 pompom making skills, or lack thereof).

has anyone used the kits? are they nice?

I do believe those are Emisanboo's kits, she of this thread, also creator of one of the patterns. She's made enough hats to know how much yarn, and it would be the Lamb's Pride, which makes a great hat.

Only question for you, b/c I don't know the postage rules: can you import wool? I remember sending a package to someone in Australia and not being able to send feathers or "any animal product."
