I gotta make me a Jayne hat. The trick will be to be sure it looks 'rough' enough. I guess maybe tug at my stitches occasionally to be sure they're kind of uneven?
This will be the perfect Christmas gift for the biggest geek on my list. Plus one for me, too, natch.

All righty, I made me a Jayne hat. However, this guy's pattern didn't seem quite right to me. The decreases near the top were too slow and rounded, and I didn't want a multiple of seven. Plus I wanted bigger ear flaps for more comedy value. I wound up making my own pattern. Anyway, here it is.
http://www.tvini.com/images/Jayne1.jpg
I used this picture from the show for reference:
http://www.still-flying.net/images/themessage/index.php?p=themessage088.jpg&pg=1
It doesn't show too well, but the earflaps and the lower part of the brim on the original hat are in fact two separate colors.
Mine is not nearly as pink as this picture looks, I swear. If I had it to do again, I'd try one less row of ribbing at the bottom, if that would still keep it from curling.
This baby'll be going to a friend for Christmas. After that, I may have to make one for myself.

SWEET! It looks fantastic, Emisanboo!
On a side note, I gave the two Jayne hats I made to their gift recipients. THEY LOVED THEM. I put them in plain white boxes, with straw covering them, with the Ma Cobb letter on top. They adored the authenticity of it, and wore the hats proudly all night, even though we were at a formal Christmas party(i.e. suits!). It was fantastic. When I get a chance to drive the hour to my wool supplier, I'm making two more, one for me and one for my BF. Much fun!

For me, not long, and I'm not a super-speedy knitter. I'd say a total of 4 hours. It's thick wool, and is knit on rather large needles, so it knits up pretty quick.

It took me about the same amount of time to knit mine. It's really fairly mindless knitting, mostly knit stitches for the body of the hat.
Mackster, great minds think alike! I stopped by Michael's today and picked up some raffia and a little straw wreath that I'm going to cut apart for packing material. Now I just need to find a white box. It's definitely the finishing touch that puts it over the top!

For sure!
Even though it wasn't part of the original package in Firefly, I also used some of the red wool to wrap ribbon-style around the box, and tied it in a shabby-looking bow at the top. I was lucky, I told Tom(one of the recipients), a baker, that I needed to borrow two of his white cake boxes because I was in a rush to fins two boxes for gifts(true, but not giving anything away). Was he ever surprised for what I used them for!
And on a happy happy note, today I found an uber-amazing LYS here in Ottawa that, among tons of other things, has Lopi wool! SWEET! Now I don't have to make the hour-long road trip to Carleton Place to the wool shop any more! YAY! *dance* I can buy the wool anytime to make the other two hats.
And the people there are so friendly and they have tons of animal fibres and and... *runs off to tell her knitting friends*
