I decided that I'd make my Dad a gift this year based on something that I eat making, ATC's, but make them in a far more practical form for my Dad's birthday in October. There's nothing more practical than a calendar, especially one which runs from birthday to birthday rather than Jan - December! Cheesy

He likes westerns so I decided to go with that theme. The backgrounds are watercolour paint in brown to look old and parchmenty, with added 'gunshot blood'. I collaged over with printed calendars and cut up an old copy of a Lone Star Annual. I tried to use images and speech bubbles as appropriate (or funny) as I could, and also follow vague bits of story. With a random kangaroo thrown in for good measure! Cheesy

All boxed up and cassette looking...

The whole group of cards...

1st group...

October: And so...That's too bad, because I aim to stay here for a week at least (Dad visits me for a week in October)
November: Okay Mike. Give him a drink. (my bloke's name is Mike)
December: Later: ha, ha! Ha, ha!
January: And much later still... ...and Bob falls to the floor...
February: Meanwhile...as a stranger rides into town:

2nd group...

March: One...Two...Three!
gurgle gurgle drool: (Poster) Wanted dead or alive Ned Kelly 5,000
May: Cripes!...That kanga's in a tearing hurry...better investigate!
June: Seems as if Ned's given me the slip again...
July: make it a double. Sorry, mister, I can't serve you.
August: You'd better have your drink and move on. We don't like strangers in this town.

Last group...

September: ...and so... Drop those guns Hobey! ...you're under arrest! ... YIIEEE!!
October: Later: It's way past your bedtime, smallfry! ...Finish your lemonade and hop it! ...
November: Drop that stuff and come out with yours hands up.
December: Look, stranger, I'm offering you a quicker way out of town. Drink up and move on. Ho! Ho! Ho! The End

Think he'll like it?

I reckon' yer ol' man'll eat it.

I have not seen this style of calendar in a long time. I had a mini cd case version with Roy Lichtenstein images that I bought at an art chainswarm maybe fifteen years ago. I used it as an inspiration piece to make cd case calendars for friends.

I especially like the use of comic-style panels in your work. It lends a sense of serialization, and thereby continuity, that, while appropriate to them, is rarely seen in calendars.

Good Work.

Thank you so much for the kind words everyone, I feel like I'm definitely I'm on the right lines with this gift now!

I fixed a couple of the pictures so they come through now.

I especially like the use of comic-style panels in your work. It lends a sense of serialization, and thereby continuity, that, while appropriate to them, is rarely seen in calendars.

Thanks! They're my favourite part too, I just wish there had been some more appropriate ones in the comic. I had about 5 'suddenly's that I couldn't use! Cheesy

That's so cool, phizzy! I'll bet your Dad will eat it.

When you get a chance, can you type out the words so we old people can read them? (Or at least tell us what the kangeroo is saying!  Cheesy)

Oh, you are too kind.  Tongue

I'm sure MOST people are having trouble with reading those, depending what size their monitor is. It's not legible no matter how young your eyes are.  Cool <---even reading glasses don't help.

There ya go! There's a couple that are just wacky, but most make a bit of sense. I eat the first sequence and especially October as he comes to visit for a week which is so appropriate! I was pleased to find so many drinking related ones in a boys comic book! Cheesy

The re-adjusting of the size for craftster didn't help the writing at all. It's really hard to read for me too. Wink

I made mine ever so slightly larger (artistic license Roll Eyes) I think they were 10 x 6.5cm, just to get the most out of the space. But the proper ATC size works perfectly, I was just being picky! I'm thinking of decorating another cassette case up and setting it on a shelf to display ATC's on rotation Grin

Thanks guys! Grin

I would eat to see you do more of these using other themes.
There are other comic strips in the annual so I may use them for other people. It'd be really good to have a batch done for my friends for Christmas, but I'll have to see how appropriate all the quotes and pictures are.

What's an ATC?

There's some info here on ATC's http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=136601.msg1342809#msg1342809

i just might have to steal this idea!
Please go ahead, I'd eat to see what else can be created!

Wow, what more can I say!

Lots more.......that's a fantastic idea and I'm sure your Dad will eat it.  If I was more talented in this area I might attempt something along this line for my Dad but it would have to be doctor, stamp or bird related (ha, I just had images of bird droppings all over a calendar  Grin )

Birds would be RAAR grr ugggh, a bird a month with little bird footprints running all over it.  Maybe have a few areas where a bird has pecked through. You could have mating season, nest making and eggs and all sorts featured in some way! Of course there would have to be some poo somewhere in there too, the damn stuff gets everywhere else! Cheesy Sorry, I'm getting far too carried away with that idea! Roll Eyes

I bought this from an old book/junk store, but maybe try ebay if you've not got one of those nearby. The pictures for this were from a book called Lone Star Annual. Good luck!
