A little while back, I went on a little wing making spree. They've made for some fun times at local music festivals. Now they are just waiting to go to Burning Man with me. They are made out of old stockings, heavy gauge wire (or a coat hanger in one case), a little bit of fabric, and fabric paint.

My favourite pair:

Same ones hanging in the sunlight:

And a detail shot:

These are the ones made from a wire hanger:

They've experienced a bit of wear and tear, here is what they look like now:

And an uber close-up of the design:

This pair glows-in-the-dark, but I have to trim off most of the feathers if I want to bring them to Burning Man, as the feathers are liable to get blown off in the dust, creating MOOP (matter out of place - basically loose garbage, and its a leave no trace event, so thats a no-no):

This is the same pair, in full gLoW:

These ones also glow:

Closer look:

Glowing:

And finally, my pink dragonfly wings:

Thanks for looking!

(You may have seen one or two of these before with my Burning Man crafts)

The colors you used are so gorgeous! The pink dragonfly wings are my favorite. How big are the wings, on average? Do you have problems with bumping into things a lot?

Thanks for all the responses!

lovething: Thank you! And I can give you some measurements -

the pink dragonfly ones, each white part is about 22 inches long, but they droop a little, they don;t stick straight out. The fabric in the middle is three inches tall.

The small green ones made out of a coat hanger have a total wingspan of two feet.

The first set (pink & green) is 20 inches high, and the wingspan is 24 inches across the top.

The Pink and blue ones with the feathers are 32 inches across, but they droop a little too.

And the blue and green glow ones are 21 inches high and 18 inches across.

There's a tutorial here:

that's pretty much what I did. Except instead of wiring them together and taping it, I made each side separately, then sewed them together with fabric squares. The hardest part was finding thick enough wire!

- thank you!!!  Kiss

Beautiful wings! I will be there too - will look for them. Maybe I will have some wings of my own by then. Or maybe I will still be finishing the Puffin costume. Look for a huge stuffed puffin head on me or my husband... hee hee. Puffins have wings too but not so picturesque!
