watermelon cha cha cha

while thumbing through my McCalls CookBook from 1963, i found this totally amusing recipe for spiked water melon. apparently back then it was called 'water melon cha cha cha' and was totally appropriate for a summer cocktail party.  {recipe came with amusing drawing but i can't get to the scanner right now}

here is the recipe, word for word.

Watermelon Cha-Cha-Cha
13 lb. watermelon
1c light rum

1. cut pulg in center of melon (plug should be 2 1/2 inches square and about 3 inches deep). pour in rum
2. trim pink flesh from plug, leaving rind about 1/2 inch thick; replace
3. place melon in refigerator, plug side up, and chill for 6 to 8 hours, or until rum flavor permeates melon
4. cut in wedges

I have had watermelon that had a fifth of vodka permiated into it... I don't remember tasting the vodka!

yeah, that and pinapple....very dangerous though b/c you keep eating it and eating it and then you make an ass out of yourself in front of all your friends and realize that maybe you should lay off the liquor. wait..that happens to everyone right?lol

My parents always bought the frozen grapes/melon/whatever fruit that comes in bags and would put it into a ziplock with rum and let it soak in the fridge over night. always a great finger food.

People always used to comment on how well behived me & my cousins were when mu Gram baby sat us... we were well behavd cause she always fed us brandied cherries!   lol 
I like to make Fire Cherrys    drain a jar of marichino cherries & fill jar with Cinnamon Schnapps (splure on Goldschlager if you can!)  let merinate a few days in fridge... TASTY!!!  They are reqallyggod on a lil bamboo stick with pineapple chunks & kiwi slices.

Cinnamon and cherries being  two of my favourite foods/flavours, I sure like the sound of this. Are they very alchaholic, as in, how many would you eat before you began to feel a little funny? I am 12 after all....
