That is really cute. Alternately you could buy precut fabric squares off ebay and save yourself a step!
I really like the way it turned out. Do you think it would be easier to make a lining versus overlocking the whole thing (I don't have a serger)

I LOVE it, it turned out much more modern and less prairie than a lot of patchwork dresses do. Now I know what to do with my odd-shaped bits of fabric!
