So, I saw this gorgeous pattern and fell in love. However, I don't know how to do hairpin lace, nor do I want to/can buy materials for hairpin lace, so I was wondering how I could create a lacy long stitch like that?

I have a book which calls this hairpin crochet and shows how to make it using a crochet hook and a hairpin like the ones you use around curlers. I doubt you can substitute since it uses the basic crochet stitches anyway.

I've never done it but it looks similar to crochet. I could scan the pic if you don't like their instructions. Mines a fairly old book, 40s? 50s?

What abvout usinga  drop stitch? I think it would look similar enough. You'd jsut have to play with the "drop" part to make it as long as you like it.
