Basket o' Flowers Wedding Cake

I made this cake for a friend's potluck wedding:



I went with artificial flowers on the top after getting frustrated with frosting and fondant. (July is not the best month for cake decorating.)

It isn't perfect, but I was still pretty pleased with the final result. And even though the icing frustrated me, I have to admit that the flower arranging was kinda fun.

I like your basket weave. Very impressive. I know what you mean about the hot months. I just made my daughter a birthday cake a week ago and just about threw all my frosting out in favor of a store bought.

Thanks! One of the reasons I chose basket-weave is that imperfections aren't catastrophic. If the scallops in your border aren't uniformly-sized, your cake can come out all wonky-looking. But if there are variations in your basket-weave, it just looks more like wicker!

I actually did make one quite nice fondant flower. And then one mediocre one. And then the fondant started to dry out and get crumbly, which is sort of what happend to my patience as well, so I scrapped the idea.

And since the cake was a 2-layer with a 12" diameter, I did get rather bored with the basket-weave before I was done. But in that, at least, I persevered.
