I've been in stores in Germany that charge you for a bag.  Of course we pay for the bags at all stores in the US, too - it's just built in to the prices of the items they sell, but seeing a bag as a line item on your receipt is a real encouragement to remember to bring your own bag.  Which is always the trick for me... remembering.  I even keep them in my car, but remember to bring them into the store.  Ugh!

I would rather use my own bag too! Recycling is awesome. And I have had one too many paper and plastic bags break and cause the important jar of salsa to break!!!

how'd the trip to market go? p.s. i love the bag and to think they had fabric at ikea - who would have guessed...hmmm is it in the textiles section perhaps ;-)
p.s. i'll give some props to your community also, ok so they double bag but they conserve water by not changing the mikva :-D
